Skit Night!

Skit night is a long standing band camp tradition. There is usually a beauty pageant, with no female contestants. Pictures will explain it all when we get those up for you. Another tradition is that all freshmen must participate. If they don’t come up with their own skit, they must perform a skit chosen by the seniors. This year they got off easy as the seniors performed with them as they performed “Teach me the Dougie”, led by our very own Dougie, Douglas Williams.

Audrey Goodman sang her version of the ballad “Hide and Seek”, and if you don’t know the song, you will. It’s the ballad for the marching band show. Here is Audrey’s version:

Hide From Sink

Hide From Sink lyrics by Audrey Goodman
Sung to “Hide and Seek” by Imojen Heap

Where are we?
What the heck . . . is going on.
The dots have only just begun to form.
Ripples in my drill book.

Sink is . . . checking.

Run that set again,
And keep your eyes
On the drum majors
While busy Sink
Watches our every move
From the tower.

Hide from Sink.
Make your sets perfectly.
All those reruns.
I want wawa now.

Chalky marks appear on ground
Where hurried moments hung before
We find our
Path and step size so we won’t
Get yelled at
Later

Hide from Sink.
Make your sets perfectly.
Use proper technique.
Work your butts off.

Hmm, what’d he say?
Did that segment go well?
No, of course it didn’t.
Hmm, what’d he say?
Was that run our best?
Oh, you know it is.
Hmm, what’d he say?
What are we setting now?
Oh, it’s set fourteen.
Hmm, what’d he say?
What did he say?

New commands keep falling from his mouth.
Check and find; now figure your dots out.
There’s my set; no, that’s not it either.
Chalk don’t help a bit; it don’t help a bit.

Hide from Sink.
Hide from Sink.

Thursday: Day four

By Thursday we have usually gotten the routine down. Then we change it. The kids still work really hard. They are good soldiers about the 3 hour practices in the morning and evening, sectionals during the hot part of the day, free time after lunch which probably doesn’t seem like free time because there are things that have to get done. Most of them have “pass offs” which is when they have to play parts of their music for the section leader to make sure they are on track. Today we also suited up in uniform to take a pic for the football program. This year Mr. Armstrong said we got it done faster than we ever have before. Thursday is also the day the seniors get to go out to dinner with their families and the staff to celebrate being a senior. Back at the school, the juniors were excited about this, because that meant they had “juniority” while the seniors were gone and got to go first in line for dinner. Senior posters made by the parents are also on display in the cafeteria for all to see the growth of these amazing young people.

Wednesday Senior Event

Traditionally we have had a Senior Event on Wednesday evening to honor our seniors, and of course everyone gets to join in the fun.  We’ve had Luau’s and Rave themed parties in the past.  This year, because we were on school property, it was an “Event with Food and Music”.  The kids didn’t really care what we called it.  They called it fun. Several parents have pictures that are better than what my camera took, so as soon as I get them we will upload them. ~Beth

A Few More Pics From Camp…

Some days if it isn’t one thing its another…seems to be the way of things this week for the bandblog.  Internet connections via aircards and hotspots have been spotty to nonexistent so the ability to upload photos to the blog hasn’t happened as well as we would like it to…but…just as the kids have pushed through the heat this week, we’ll continue to work over the next several days to get more pics up on the blog.

For now, here a few more photos…just to keep the anticipation building…

Day 2 In The Books…

We’ve had a busy first couple of days! Last night was a new event for band camp…history night. Mr. Armstrong shared with the students the humble beginnings from which this program started. We got to see some videos of past shows, and when last years show was played it was cool to hear the kids singing along with their parts. We also had a couple of guest speakers.   Aaron McCullough, a former Northgate student who marched in the early days of the program, told us what his experience in this program meant to him, and Matt McCord, marching and drum major coach and based on last night, motivational speaker, shared his story. We were very fortunate to have them speak to the kids. After working hard today the kids are currently enjoying another new event for band camp…Movie Night! A big thanks to past Northgate band parents Dr. Bruce McCoy and Julie McCoy for making Movie Night happen.

We promise more pictures tomorrow!

We’ve got some incredibly hardworking chaperones keeping your children safe, healthy and well fed.  Come on out and check out whats happening at Skit Night on Thursday night as well at our preview show on Friday night.

And now, on to the pictures you’ve all been waiting for…
